These are the elements that define blocks of text. As a result, they all need end tags Some elements are:
- BLOCKQUOTE -- block quotations (attributes: ALIGN)
- DIV -- block divisions (attributes: ALIGN)
- P -- paragraphs (attributes: ALIGN)
- HR -- horizontal dividers -- lines across the page (attributes: ALIGN, WIDTH, SIZE, NOSHADE)
There are several types of lists. Lists are block-like elemnets, so they too must have end tags.
- OL-- Ordered lists (each item defined by LI)
- UL-- Unordered lists (each item defined by LI)
- DL -- Description/glossary lists:
- Terms defined by DT
- Description defined by DD
There are six headings, ranging from H1 (the most important heading) to H6 (least important). These also require end tags, since they mark a block of text.
There are several elements for highlighting text -- and giving the text meaning. Some examples are shown at the document http://www.utoronto.ca/webdocs/HTMLdocs/NewHTML/emphasis.html.
