Images used on computers are stored in a digital format. There are, unfortunately, literally hundreds of these formats, but only 3-4 that can be used for images to be included inline within an HTML document. The image formats supported by Web browsers are: used to:
- GIF -- Graphics Interchange Format
Good for solid-color icons/graphics, bad for photographs- JPEG -- Joint Photograhic Expert Group Good for photograhic images, bad for icons/solid-color graphics.
- XBM -- X-Bitmap. B/W images only. Should use GIF instead.
- XPM -- X-Pixelmap. Simple color images only. Should use GIF instead.
- PNG -- Portable Network Graphics. Planned successor to GIF. Better in many ways, but not yet widely supported.
You should convert any graphics to be included in Web pages into either GIF or JPEG
