2.3 Server Remote Access Controls

Servers can be configured to restrict access to particular directories. Restrictions can be placed on the following:
  1. allowed HTTP methods
  2. restriction by Subdomain Name or by IP address
  3. password protection for username authentication -- in this case, there is also a specification of the realm under which the file is protected (i.e. which password file to use)
  4. encryption -- is the file accessible only by an encrypted channel.
These restrictions are placed on a directory basis. HOwever, these restrictions map onto all URLs referncing this directory or a file/directory within this directory. Thus restricting access to the directory /svc/stuff/foo also restricts access to the redirected URL /svc/stuff/foo/xxx, even if the location to which it is redirected has no such restriction.
